Home learning packets are now ready for pickup. I have prepared them for each child. Let me know if you are unable to come and I will send you a pdf version to print at home :) As always, let me know if there is anything I can do for you or your child. I have been posting instructional videos for you to use as supplement or to rewatch. I am available to create more videos or do video calls during the day.

Sending love,

Mme Sharpe

I will be posting a suggested home learning *schedule* for you and your child to help you follow along with the work that has been provided. This will ensure that they complete all of the work assigned to them. I will try to shorten our whole class online meetings to 45 minutes so that students can work independently or in small groups on their assigned tasks.

Due to the current situation with blended home and in-person learning, I will not always be available between 10:25 and 11:55. I will be assisting students with their in-person learning. I will try to respond to any questions, emails, or texts as quickly as possible. I am also available for one-on-one calls in the afternoon, despite working from home. The same conditions might apply and there may be  mild (small, 1 and 5 year old) interruptions.

A complete SUGGESTED schedule for the rest of this week will be posted this afternoon to assist parents who want to work ahead, as well as instructional videos to accompany those lessons. Yesterday, I was unable to produce them as we were trying to schedule and balance this new situation.

*** SUGGESTED LEARNING/WORK FOR WEDNESDAY, JAN. 12***

Math (30 minutes)

  • 1 number of the day
  • ½ sheet of multiplication questions (50 questions)
  • 1 word problem (#2 or #3)

Literacy (30 minutes)

  • Read for 15 minutes (Je lis, reading comprehension or French book)
  • Write for 15 minutes about a topic of your choice

Well-Being (30 minutes)

  • Work for 10 minutes on your Science- what can you do to remain in good health? Look up one thing that you can do and how you would implement it in your day-to-day life. Record it on your sheet
  • Choose a mental health challenge for the day or visit Mr. Williston’s teacher page for physical activity ideas.

Good afternoon,

I am going to be logging on to Teams tomorrow morning at 9:00 A.M. for any students who are able to attend. I am really looking forward to seeing as many (bright and cheery) faces as possible, but please do not stress if you are unable to get logged in.

I am going to be uploading videos here as well as in Teams to accompany the work that is provided. I will try to add as much as possible tomorrow so that you can work at your own pace. I want to make this as independent as possible for your families; I understand the stress that we are all under and want to do as much as possible to support you all through this hurdle. If you think of anything that I can do to help, please reach out to me.

Hi everyone!

Home learning packets are now ready and can be picked up from Door B today until 3 P.M. or tomorrow. I added materials and books for each child. The survey that I sent home said that most parents preferred to have physical copies- If you said you would prefer digital copies emailed to you, could you just send me a quick email at teri.sharpe@nbed.nb.ca so that I can forward those documents to you? I didn't consider that the survey wouldn't allow me to view individual responses (I'll try a different avenue to collect information if ever we find ourselves in this position again!) so I prepared a packet for each child with physical materials.

Let me know if you have questions or concerns!

Mme Sharpe

Good afternoon everyone,

Happy New Year! This isn't the start to the year that we all wanted, but it is the start to the year that we are getting. I am reaching out to you all in an effort to best customize the homes learning for your needs.

If you can take 5 minutes to complete the survey below, I will take time on Monday morning to start assembling home learning packets. As everyone is attempting to prepare packets and the weather is less than desirable, I will require a bit of extra time to make sure that your child gets everything they need. I will notify you all if packets are ready before Tuesday morning. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I am hopeful that this will help cut down on copies and ensure that your child has an individualized packet for their needs.

I thank you again for all of your support.

Good afternoon,

I meant to send home a memo today regarding Secret Santa and the week's events but I forgot!

Since there is no school next week, I would like to do Secret Santa on Friday. Please send your gifts in by Thursday so that I can see who still needs to bring something in (and give gentle reminders!)

Tomorrow, students can wear red and green and come with hungry bellies as everyone will be getting a hot holiday lunch from the cafeteria!

Look for a memo from me tomorrow about the rest of the week :)

Hi everyone! I'm trying to navigate setting up a Facebook group, and having issues adding parents as friends to add to the private group. Can you use this link to send me a friend request? I'll then add you to the private group I created and see how that works :)

Good morning families!

It looks like we are headed for week 3 of home learning. I hope that you are all doing well and that things are going well at home (and I am not just referring to the school work!). I understand that every family circumstance is different- I hope that I am giving you all enough options for home learning without causing you undue stress. Please remember that you can reach out to me at ANY time with questions or requests for support. We are all just doing the best we can given this current situation.

Next week, I am participating in the development of the Grade 5 Math Assessment for the province. This means that I will not be 'available' on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I will have more information about the supply teacher who will be replacing me on Sunday evening. At the moment, the individual replacing me does not speak French. I will be uploading a video with the morning routine, as well as all of the inferencing work we normally do. He will be available all day via Teams and email (I will post his email on along with a better update for the week). Of course, if there are issues that only I can solve, I am going to be answering emails and questions in the Teams group to the best of my ability during those days, as well. I just might not be available to respond right away :)

Next Friday is a day off for students as teachers prepare report cards and engage in professional learning. Please take that time to take a much deserved break :)

That's all for now :)

On Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., we are going to be doing an inquiry-based science experiment. Please see the attached document for more information. This one is really fun and doesn't require lots of specific supplies for success. I hope you'll join me!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Students can choose to work on some of these activities. Most of them should be able to do the majority of this in French, but since the skills apply to both French and English, they can feel free to try them in either language!

Grade 4 and 5

This week try to find some non-fiction texts to read. You can read a book about nature, an internet article, a magazine, or any other non-fiction text that you are interested in. Below are links to sites with free non-fiction texts. After you have finished your reading, choose two of the boxes below to answer.

What questions do you have about the topic?

What connections did you make as you read?

Text to Self?

Text to World?

Text to something else you have read?

Write about some facts you learned from your reading. Share your opinion about something you read.

Pick three events from your book or article and write about the things that caused those events to happen.

Describe the main ideas and details you read about this week.

Compare or contrast ideas from the book. Write about two things that are similar or different.

Draw a picture that summarizes what you learned this week. Label your drawing to identify

important ideas.

What information was most interesting to you?

Write a letter to the author. What did you like?

What questions do you still have?

Grades 4 & 5

As the weather gets cooler, there are several fall activities that you can do outdoors. Choose a topic from the list below or select your own topic and write a piece of procedural writing giving instructions on how to do, make, or be your topic.

Hey everyone!

Day 234762 of home learning.

JUST KIDDING! It's ONLY day 3!...

I had some parents asking questions about the expectations for home learning. So I am hoping to clarify things a little bit for you. I apologize in advance for my long-windedness :)

Every morning, I will have a teams meeting on the MS Teams platform. This is at 9:30 am. If your child is ABLE, I would love to see them online. I am continuing our in class routines- weekly message, reading comprehension strategy (inferencing), and a bit of daily math. This typically lasts an hour, but I am willing to stay online longer with the kids if they want to do other activities.

Then, I send them on their own to finish their daily minutes (90 minutes of learning) and I've provided tons of work in the files section of the MS Teams platform (video to come on how to access for those less technically inclined, like myself!) I'm still available for Teams meetings with small groups of students or one-on-one, if your child doesn't understand something or wants extra help. Additionally, they can drop comments in the chat section of the platform and I will answer them as quickly as possible.

I've added math worksheets in almost all of the outcomes that we have covered so far this year. I will be adding the rest throughout the week, as well as additional sheets for the items that are already there. The expectation is NOT for students to complete all of this work! They know what topics they find challenging, so have them get some practice on the things that they find most difficult. I am also working on quick "tutorial" videos for each of those items in order to help them with that work. Again, I am available all day to also hop on a call with students who still require more support.

I've added information for a reading platform called Je Lis. The document will explain everything for you, but if you still have questions, please let me know. I want to give them as many options to support their learning from home as possible. I am also in the provcess of setting up an account for another online platform where students can go and choose from many books to read and listen to- I know that finding French materials to read is timely and difficult. Another post is coming for that learning platform, called Boukili. Some other suggestions for practicing French at home:

-Put on a kid's show in French (Netflix often has a variety of shows that can be turned on in French, and adding subtitles is a great way for your child to get their reading AND oral practice for the day)

-Listen to the weather statements in French, or other kid-friendly announcements

-Check for podcasts designed for kids in French. These ones might be worth checking out! Have your child replay the same message several times. It is amazing how listening to a text several times opens up our comprehension :)

https://www.alliance-francaise.ca/en/culture/online/family/878-4-podcast...

This one is also REALLY cool- all about mythology and legends (and the speaker is not tooooooo fast

https://www.radio-en-ligne.fr/podcasts/mythes-et-legendes

While we all hope that this ends soon, we are preparing for the potential to have this span the longhaul. I am trying to accommodate all of the different learning paths and realities so be patient, but also reach out. You are your child's best advocate and if you need something, I am here to help.

At this moment, I will not be collecting work for the purpose of evaluation for report cards. If that changes, I will provide you with an update and help guide you through this process. We are learning all of this together and we will work through it as a team!

If you still have questions, please send me an email teri.sharpe@nbed.nb.ca and I will reply to you as quickly as possible.

Hang in there, folks!

Hi again,

Just to let you know that anyone who hasn't reached out to me about home learning and hasn't been online for MS Teams meetings, I've been placing all kinds of new content on the MS Teams platform. If you are having issues getting on, please reach out to me as soon as possible as I am covering new content that will be assessed and will apply to report cards (hopefully we will return to in class so I can do a review of the material in person before assessing, but I want to be prepared).

There are lots of documents, videos and other material to support your child's learning from home. I understand that not everyone is able to be online every day, some not at all. I am recording all of my sessions with the kids and they are placed in the recording folder of MS Teams for your child to watch or consult. Additionally, I am recording videos for each of the things that have been taught and discussed during those meetings for students who only have limited time or access. If I can provide additional support, please let me know.

Hello!

Just a note to break down my learning schedule for tomorrow, should students like to join me in MS Teams.

9:30 am on MS Teams (approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour)

Morning routine

Message of the week- reading and clarifying unknown or difficult words. Search for the nouns in the text (this allows me to have important discussions with them about plural, masculin, feminine, and how adjectives and nouns need to be properly accorded to one another)

Inferencing practice

Currently we are working away on inferencing from texts to develop our comprehension. Students use context clues and their prior knowledge, if necessary, to figure out important comprehension of a text. This is really important as they advance in their text levels with guided reading and for building understanding in topics in class.

Update on literacy and 'guided reading'

I understand that a number of you are unable to get online during the daytime for one reason or another. My goal in the coming few days is to photograph and record guided reading books for the students with the highest need for practice. I will reach out to individual faimiles to tell you which text your child should be practicing and give you an idea of step by step activities that you can do (this will be a word document that they can use regardless of the book). For students who are more advanced, I will have a genius hour challenge coming. Students will choose a topic for which they are passionate, find some information, write a short presentation and share with the class when we return to school :) Should we only have time to start this project, students will be given time during guided reading block at school to continue their work.

Equivalent fractions

** This is NEW content **

I have placed a little note in French for students, along with a document that will be used in our session tomorrow. I will also be adding some equivalent fractions practice sheets, and a YouTube video that will help refresh their memories and show them concrete ways to calculate them. We will be working on this all week, so if your child cannot join us during the day, I recommend that they revisit the MS Teams group and the recordings to get the instruction. If they have any questions, please reach out via MS Teams or email :)

That's all I have for now!

Mme Sharpe
