Hello October

Posted: November 2, 2021

Here are our sight words. Feel free to print these out if you are able or just copy them on some scrap paper you have around the house. A fun way to practice sight words is to copy them on an index card or a piece of paper that size, and sick them on the wall in your child's room. At bedtime, turn out the lights and shine a flashlight on each word and say them together. Challenge your child to a see who gets the most right!

Sight word Videos

What are sight words you ask ?

Sight words are words, like comedoes, or who, that don’t follow the rules of spelling or sylables.  These words have to be memorized because decoding them can be quite tricky. Students are taught to memorize them by sight. Put simply; sight words are words we teach our young readers to know by heart, so that they can recognize them immediately (within 3 seconds) and read them without having to use decoding skills.

This link goes directly to Jack Hartman's Level A sight word song for the word "am". Once you click on this link, the rest of the sight word videos will appear on the right hand side of the screen. These words are also found in your child's yellow duo-tang. Students at this time are working at various levels in the class, try a couple of these videos out per day! Once your child has mastered the words you are practicing go on to the next 2 videos. :)

Letter ID and Letter Sound Video

This is a song that children can listen to which will help them review the names of letters and the corresponding sound. It is so important to master the sounds of letters as well as the name of letters.

Good morning, Grade One Families!

Today is Terrific Tuesday! Are you ready for home learning today?

Attached to this note is a lesson plan for you to use as a guideline, while we are at home learning. Please email me if you have any questions.

Please keep all student work completed during Home Learning and send it to school with your child when we return to school base learning. I would ask that a pencil be used when your child is completing any writing or math activities.

Math

Practice Counting forward from  0 to 20 and then backward from 20 - 0! Teach your family how to play blast off. Don't forget , who ever says zero has to sit down !

Count forward starting at 4 and stopping at 12

Count backwards starting at 15 and stopping at 2

Look around your home for patterns, or make some patterns with different things around your home. Say them out loud!  Then play the pattern game on abcya with a family member. Here is the link https://www.abcya.com/games/shape_patterns

Your green duo-tang has fun math games to play in your green duo-tang

Literacy

Read a book or listen to a story on storyline online : https://www.youtube.com/user/storylineonline/videos

After the story tell an adult who was the main character in the story and write a sentence about him/her. Don;t forget to start your sentence with a capital letter and end with the proper punctuation!

Here is a neat experiment to try:

Floating Egg Experiment

Materials Needed

-2 Clear Glasses

- 2 Eggs

-Salt

-Spoon

Directions

1.     Pour each glass half full of water

2.    Add 10 tsp of salt to one of the glasses.

3.    Place an egg into the water with no salt. Write a sentence describing what happened.
