Home-learning Nov 4 (Thursday)

I feel like a record - do kids know what that is? So, let's point form it!

  • Bring back paper copies.
  • Priority activities are most important, followed by the daily exploratory activity, then the "other" awesome activities.
  • Time is precious. Kids are kids. Do what you can with what you have.
  • Links are on our class website. Mme. Robichaud | King Street Elementary (nbed.nb.ca) and login information is in the back of their agenda.

RE: Je lis, je lis website. Once student record themselves reading, I listen to it and always send a voice note back. To access it, click "my recordings". The green play button allows them to hear themselves read. The blue double dialogue speech bubbles will hear what I have to say. Click that, a screen will pop up and press play to hear my lovely voice! haha.

WORD WORK – “Le mot du jour" in Covid Pack. Complete the remaining words. 

*FRENCH READING* – Website “Je lis, je lis”. Listen to a book, practice reading aloud and record the book (only if you haven't already - I'm swamped with 81 recordings to review! YAY!). MATH – Grade 4: work in your covid Math sheets (either pack) for 15-20 minutes. I would suggest lesson 3.4 PW13 #23-30. Grade 3 – complete the following questions from the pack (PW2 #1-14, PW6 #1-10, PW7 #1-8,16-19).  Please note: these are the same questions assigned on Monday, November 1st. They can continue completing questions in this pack as they (and you) feel fit.

Home-learning Nov 3 (Wednesday)

Thank you to those who reached out over the past few days. Every family circumstance is different and I appreciate all of you making the best decisions for your family and being honest with me in what the decision & struggles have been.

As usual, most activities will remain similar from one day to the next including the priority activities and one exploratory activity which changes daily. Please be reminded that any "paper" home learning is asked to be returned to me either via email (pictures/scans) or the hardcopy when we get back to school. Thank you! With the online websites, I already have access to their progress.

*MONEY MAKER* - Cash or debit? Counting money is a life skill that we sometimes take for granted in this debit/credit world. Students are no longer as money savvy as "when we were young". Let's change that!

 

  • Count out the money in your Piggy Bank. Remember to group coins in piles of $1 to help you count out your money. Skip count the remainder when even dollars can't be formed. If you don't have a piggy bank, check out the picture attached and count one of my daughter's Piggy Bank. Ssshhhh!
  • Make the following amounts using real money or drawing it out on paper. To note: in French the $ sign goes at the end of the amount and in English it goes at the beginning. Amounts to make: 75 cents, 95 cents, 1,40$ and 3,80$. Choose one amount and make it two different ways (ex. 25 cents could be one quarter, 5 nickels, or two dimes and a nickel - three different ways!).
  • Challenge questions:
    • If a cookie costs 75 cents and I have 4,00$. How many cookies can I buy? How much money would I have left?
    • I have 6,00$ and bought the main meal (5,50$). Colleen gave me 5 coins. Which coins did she give me as change?
    • I have 5,00$ and bought a treat (1,00$). Colleen gave me over 10 coins back. Which coins did she give me as change?

 

 

*OUTSIDE EXPLORATORY* - Make a balance obstacle course that's longer than two car lengths. Challenge a family member or neighbour (young or old) to complete it with you.

Home-learning Nov 2 (Tuesday)

Here we go with day 2!

I am certain some of you are feeling overwhelmed by this whole situation. Be rest assured that we can only do what we can do. As you'll see, most activities will remain similar from one day to the next including the priority activities. One exploratory activity will change daily. I appreciate all the work each of you are doing inside and outside of your home. Please let me know if your child is unable to complete home learning - either by choice or by circumstance (if you haven't already). Thank you!

*BANNOCK BAKER* - Bannock is a delicious bread that has been made for a long time in Canada. It is known as Iuskinikn in Mi'kmaq. I LOVED making this with my cousins from Manitoba every summer! We used to cook it over a campfire on a stick, but the stove works just as well! Here is the basic recipe. You can fancy it up by making into a pizza, adding raisins/chocolate chips, or topping it with Nutella or a piece of cheese!

 

  • In a large ziplock or a bowl, place 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1 TBSP of baking powder, 1/2 TBSP sugar & 1/4 tsp of salt.
  • Add 1/4 cup of margarine or butter and smoosh until it's crumbly.
  • Mix in a little less than 1/2 cup milk and mix. Make the dough soft but not too sticky.
  • Shape into balls and flatten to 1" thick. Place on a greased (or parchment paper lined) baking sheet.
  • Bake at 425'F for approximately 25 minutes or until lightly browned.

*OUTSIDE EXPLORATORY* - Walk around your house/neighbourhood chanting "25, 50, 75, 0".

Home-learning Nov 1 (Monday)

Here we go!

Sticking to a routine is best for the students but, we can only do what we can do! If you need anything at all, just reach out and I’m here to support you, your child or anyone helping your child through this home learning experience.

I fully understand some students will be able to complete more than others. I’ve placed a * on the learning activities that are priority. Hope this helps! All links are found on our class website. *CANDY MATH* - For this students will need their Trick or Treating candy (what’s left! Haha). Sort your candy in groups with all the cheesies in a pile, plain chips in a pile, candy bars according to flavour etc. Solve the following problems. Send me a picture of you with your fingers showing the question number next to your answer :

·        Question #1: Which type of treat is the least popular?

·        Question #2: Which type of treat is the most popular?

·        Question #3: Which two treats can be combined together to give you the total of the most popular treat? Closest to the total is also acceptable if you can’t find the exact number.

·        Question #4: Pick your favourite treat.

o   Grade 3’s – Start at 100, count by two’s for each favourite treat you have. Write down the final number you said then take your picture.

o   Grade 4’s – Start at 1200, count by three’s for each favourite treat you have. Write down the final number you said then take your picture.

·        Question #5: Take 5 small candy bars and place them in a line. Find another object in your home that is approximately 5 small candy bars long.

 

*OUTSIDE EXPLORATORY* - Go outside and write the word “le 1 novembre”. Use any means you’d like – chalk, sticks, foggy window etc. Take a picture and send it my way.

Class note Oct 27

Please remind students to dress warmly. The wind is chilly and some students are coming inside looking pretty cold.
 
TOMORROW (Thursday Oct 28th) we will be going for a walk downtown to look at the pumpkins and completing a follow-up activity in class. Extra warm clothes and extra masks are encouraged.
 
We are still in search of 2L milk cartons if you or anyone you know has extra.

Oct 25 class note

Hi Folks,
Students are loving working with the few clipboards I have for the class. If you have any kicking around at home that you'd like to donate, or one specifically for your child, please send them in.
 
Friday is the soccer jamboree for a few students in our class AND our Halloween party. We will be having it during soccer's "off time" for everyone to be able to join with their costume.  Also, a quick clarification on the party - treats are allowed to be passed out but must be pre-packaged/store bought. No homemade delicious goods.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday!
We've been working hard at our literacy skills and some students are ready to move up in their reading levels. You will receive a message in your child's agenda if this happens. By November, our goal is for grade 3 students to be at level F or higher and grade 4 students to be at level J or higher.
 
Our class will be going skating on November 25th for those that have volunteered and submitted their proof of vaccinations.
 
We have two online learning platforms for our class - splashlearn and lalilo. If there's downtime at home, please have your child log on. Their login info is glued in their agenda.  Some students will also be receiving "Zorbit" starting on Monday.

A little note Monday Oct 18th

Hi folks!
We are back in the swing of things. I'll be sending home some new photocopies to replenish the covid packs. Better to have more than less! Please keep an eye. If there are any sheets completed during the home-learning days, please send them in.
 
Tomorrow, Tuesday Oct 19th, we are planning to do a few activities outside. Please have your child wear RUBBER BOOTS as we will be walking around through the woods etc. An extra pair of clothes or splashpants may be an idea too (especially socks). Feel free to pack their sneakers for outside recess.

Home-learning Oct 15 2021

Hope you're doing well and able to pick away a bit (or a lot) on the home-learning front. As always, do what you can. I feel like there was lots to work with over the past few days. Here is what I'd like students to focus on today....
  • MATH
  • FRENCH LITERACY
  • SCIENCE
    • Place 1 cup of milk in a sandwich baggie with 1/4 cup of sugar and a splash of vanilla (or a squirt of chocolate syrup). Seal the baggie. Place the baggie inside a large freezer baggie. Cover the bag with ice cubes and sprinkle the ice-cubes with salt. Put a pair of mitts on and shake the bag for a good 10 minutes. The sugar and milk will turn into ice-cream. Next, send me a picture of you eating your delicious icecream! Enjoy!
  • ENGLISH LITERACY
    • Complete the "spelling" pages in the covid pack. Bring back to school (finished or unfinished) as we will be going over this in class.
  • OUTDOOR PLAY
    • Find a bug and sketch it in your agenda on today's date.

We are collecting photos of family members who served or who are currently serving in the military. We will be having a slideshow presentation as part of our 2021 “Virtual” Remembrance Day Program. This slide show will be uploaded on our KSE school website

Homework - Teusday, Wednesday Thursday

Here is the work students are to complete over the next THREE days:
  • MATH
  • FRENCH LITERACY
  • SCIENCE
    • Place three ice cubes on a plate. One ice cube will remain plain, sprinkle salt on the second ice cube and sprinkle sugar on the third. Predict which ice cube will melt first. Why do you think this? Observe the ice cubes as they melt. Which melted first? Last?
  • ENGLISH LITERACY
    • Call someone over the age of 60 (they love to hear from people they love). Tell them a description of one person that sat at the dinner table with you on the weekend.
      • Grade 3's are to concentrate on the physical traits of the person.
      • Grade 4’s are to concentrate on personality traits and how the person was feeling. If you do a great job with your description, they should be able to guess who you are describing!
    • Go to Storyline Online - Home and choose a story to listen to or read for 15 minutes yourself.
  • OUTDOOR PLAY
    • "Create" the following numbers like in the example given (see attachment examples). Make your own code if necessary.
      • Grade 3 numbers: 784, 263, and number 400 two different ways (use lots of 10 of 10's to create 100 or 10 of 1's to create 10 etc).
      • Grade 4 numbers: 3567, 2941 and number 5000 two different ways (use lots of 10's to create 100's etc).
    • Write your reading level words for 15 minutes (see attachment) using items from outside. If you're reading at level H+, use level H. Example of what to use: side walk chalk, stick, write in sand, use pebbles or mud. Nature is endless. Please no vandalism or killing nature!
For those who have already been self-isolating, please hold on to your customized packages and bring them back to school when we return.

Hi Folks!

Here are the home-learning activities for today:

  • "Le mot du jour" (from covid pack): complete page 1 été
  • "C'est l'été" (from covid pack): complete this page using the words in the "le mot du jour" pack. Bring this back to school tomorrow!
  • Math pages (from covid pack): grade 3 complete questions #1-19, grade 4 complete questions #1-13 & #17
  • Splashmath (login is on glued on the back page of their agenda) for 15-20 minutes. There are assignments for your child to complete.
  • Listen to a tumblebook in French (TumbleBooks - Cyber-livres pour cyber-enfants (biblioenfants.com)) Login is nblib and the password is nbschools
  • Go outside for 60 minutes. Build a fort. Find bugs. Or just run! It's gorgeous out.

Homework Reminder

Homework Expectations

  • Read ALOUD French Guided Reading book 2x/week (10-15 minutes each session)
  • Read ALOUD English Guided Reading book or another book 2x/week (10-15 minutes each session)

Optional:

  • Read aloud more often than asked
  • Splashlearn Math site (I can see what they do, we use it in class as a station)
  • Zorbit Math/Mathstoria (still setting this up, but similar idea to splashlearn)
  • Card games - we have a number we use in class

Overall, homework shouldn't be a chore but an opportunity for students to share what we are practicing and learning in class. Playing boardgames and spending time as a family is just as important. Have fun with the homework!
